Today's Quick Mention: We're back!
Sort of. Expect a kind of odd schedule this
week with regular posting Monday through Friday,
nothing for the 4th of July weekend and then back to
normal next Monday. Weird, I know, but it'll
be like an adventure in blogging. Or
something.
I actually didn't miss as much new stuff as I
thought I would while I wandered around San
Francisco, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty
to share. Below is the first of who knows how
many EPs I'll be trying to get posted up this week.
Enjoy.
:The
Black Angels - Bad Vibrations:
I've long had a strong attachment to this local act, so it
doesn't bother to me to admit that if they've made it, I
find a way to like it. Still, it's good to hear them
picking up the pace a bit and getting back to the more
accessible psych sound that made me love their debut so much
(the sophomore effort was the definition of drone).
Phosphene Dream is due out September 14 on Blue Horizon
Records.
:These
United States - The Great River:
This DC-based juggernaut just doesn't stop, does it? I
honestly feel as though they've put out 12 albums in the
last couple of years. It's crazy. Fortunately,
whatever they churn out also happens to be pretty damn good.
This track features their more twangy-rock side, but it's
still packing a level of charm that's hard to find anywhere
else. What Lasts will hit store shelves on July
20 via United Interests.
:Funeral
Party - Finale:
2010 has been a bit short on the raucous front, so I really
love that this is nothing but full-on raw energy. It
makes me think of those crazy (and rare) shows where the
crowd is so wound up that they're singing and making more
noise than the band. I hope the rest of their album is
this good. RCA Records will release Golden Age Of
Knowhere on August 30.
:The
Sandwitches - Stardust:
It just wouldn't be right if I ran off to San Francisco for
a week and then didn't come back with something from at
least one band from their local scene. So, here are
The Sandwitches, who are on the rise and recommended
by SOTO's film-expert (and Bay Area resident) Noah.
You should definitely grab headphones so that you can fully
appreciate their ethereal ways. The Duck Duck Goose
12" will come out via Secret Seven Records on July 13.
:Autolux
- Supertoys:
Finally! This trio have been working on a follow-up to
the brilliant Future Perfect for about five years,
and it's actually going to come out. Will it be good?
I don't know. The random song that leaked last year
was solid and this single definitely puts a smile on my
face, but who can say whether or not all that time will end
up being worth the wait? Guess we'll see when
Transit Transit comes out August 3 on TBD Records.
