Today's Quick Mention: I did a little a
math on Twitter yesterday and noticed that if you
average the Rotten Tomatoes score of every
blockbuster that's been released between April and
now, the number you get is 47.2%. What the
hell happened to all the good movies this summer?
I've already done two EPs this week, so we might at
well keep it going. Enjoy.
:The
Kills - Pale Blue Eyes:
Not sure if I'm the only one, but these days I only think of
Alison Mosshart as Jack White's bluesy rock accomplice.
Is that bad? I suppose not since I really like The
Dead Weather (especially the new LP), but I shouldn't forget
about the Kills, and this track, which is part of the
ongoingLevi's Pioneer Sessions: The
Revival Recordings, definitely reaffirms that.
Grab headphones for this sultry effort.
:The
Thermals - I Don't Believe You:
I know a lot of you would prefer The Thermals not continue
down the path of pop punk, but I have to admit that this is
my favorite version of them. They're just really good
at crafting hooks, and I love how energetic they always
sound. Don't snob this, turn it up loud and have a
good time with it. September 7 is when you can expect
to see Kill Rock Stars release Personal Life.
:Blonde
Redhead - Here Sometimes:
This is a pretty great track. Usually, the longer a
band is together the more likely they seem to lose whatever
it is that made them good in the first place, but I think
after 17 years Blonde Redhead may still be improving, and
you just have to find that impressive. 4AD will
release Penny Sparkle on September 14. Also, if
you still have your headphones on, you're ready to click
play.
:Sonny
And The Sunsets - Too Young To Burn:
I feel like I should already know about this guy. He's
toured with some big name acts, put out quite a few albums
and even had a music-oriented art gallery that made its way
from San Francisco (his hometown, my recent vacation spot)
to Austin. Oh well. At least I'm off to some
sort of start with Sonny by digging this breezy track.
Tomorrow Is Alright will be out August 31 on Fat
Possum.
:Brock
Enright - Maybe:
The press release for this mentioned Brock as a nice
compliment to Yeasayer, and I actually think that makes
quite a bit of sense. Although, you should know that
the album as a whole definitely showcases that thought more
than this quick-tease of a song (or gem, if you prefer).
Torben and the documentary Brock Enright: Good
Time Will Never Be The Same just came out this past
Tuesday. Seek them both out!
