Did you make it out to Psych Fest 3 this past weekend?  You would think I would’ve made at least one of the three nights, but unfortunately I did not.  Friday night I was at Antone’s for Local Natives while on Saturday I stayed in to watch the Thunder completely destroy the Lakers.  Then on Sunday John and I saw My Education perform their live movie score of Sunrise at the Alamo Drafthouse, which was a very cool experience.  All in all - an outstanding weekend.

If you’re like me and missed Psych Fest 3, you can check two past performers of the festival this Friday night when Woven Bones and Shapes Have Fangs open up for Those Darlins at the Continental Club.  Shapes Have Fangs will be first to take the stage.  The band is best known for backing Sky Saxon of The Seeds prior to his unexpected passing last year.  Many of their songs have a retro feel, but the jangly guitars and nice hooks keep them from feeling old or stale.  In fact, the result is quite the opposite.

There are a number of bands playing lo-fi, raw, and fuzzy rock but few do it better than the Austin trio Woven Bones.  Their 7” releases and The Minus Touch EP have received much attention from plenty of the indie rock blogs.  The press coverage should only increase with the release of their debut album In and Out and Back Again on May 18.  There’s a sense of danger and evil when Woven Bones sings about sorcery, but the music is always a rocking good time. No need to be afraid.

The show on Friday night should be quite fun. I’m especially excited because I’ve never been to the world famous Continental Club. It’s sad, I know. When I moved to here I figured I’d go there all the time, but I tend to always end up at Mohawk or Beerland.  Oh well.
