Being a live music fan in Austin is all about making choices, especially since you’re bound to have scheduling conflicts in a city with dozens of music venues and literally hundreds of bands playing each week. My latest concert dilemma revolves around choosing who to see on Friday, April 23rd.

Option #1 is Local Natives at Antone’s.  I'm kind of all for this since I missed them at SXSW, and I’m in love with their new album, Gorilla Manor.  It features rich harmonies that have drawn comparisons to Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear.  It also has various infectious pop elements that give the record a nice bounce.  In other words, I'm really loving it.

Behind door number two is The Gary (is that a great name or what?).  The Austin band is playing The Scoot Inn along with St 37 and Extermination Angels.  I discovered The Gary a few backs after downloading Sound Advice Vol. IV: The Way We Get By, the super SOTO-approved comp by Austin Sound, and recently I picked up their new album, Logan, which is a winner if there ever was one with 10 awesome rock tracks crammed into less than 30 minutes.  Searing guitars, thunderous bass, and smashing drums - if you enjoy great ‘80s bands such as Mission of Burma and Husker Du, you’re going to like The Gary.

Okay, so I’m obviously amped to see both Local Natives and The Gary.  But I think I'll end up at Local Natives on Friday since The Gary has an even better show in May.  On the 8th they’ll be playing The Midgetmen's 8th Anniversary Show at the Mohawk.  Also on the bill are The Midgetmen (duh), La Snacks (a personal favorite), Ringo DeathStarr, The Mercers, Sour Notes, and Treaty Oak.  I hate to wait another 3 weeks to see them, but I have a feeling it’ll be worth it.
