On Sunday, I leave for a magical journey to the East Coast.  I’m excited and you should be too, since I’ll hopefully be bringing back a buttload of sweet hip hop from DC.  Wish me luck!

NEW JAMS:

:Shad K - The Calling (Featuring Jermicide And Destruments):  Irish DJ Dany Diggs just released Introducing Danny Diggs, an EP featuring the illustrious Shadrach Kabango (AKA Shad K), on whom I have a pretty well known hip hop crush.  The EP also features other great MCs, like Akrobatik and Soustice, but Shad’s verse, as always, is the one that catches my ear most.  Give a listen to this track: dollars to donuts you’ll catch the Shad bug.

:Us3 - B-Boys (Featuring Sene):  The lore of Us3 is, well, legendary.  Group founder Geoff Wilkinson talked his way out of getting sued by Blue Note records for his hit Cantaloop, and instead, inexplicably, Blue Note opened its archives to him.  And so Us3 was born, based around Geoff Wilkinson’s sample arrangements.  This album, Stop.Think.Run. features two NYC up-and-comers, Sene and Brook Yung as the vocalists. This track is one of the more lighthearted of the album, and the jazz used is outstanding.  Keep fucking that chicken, Geoff!

:Cyne - Floatin' (Featuring Seven Star, Soarse Spoken, Stres) The cosmic-themed Starship Utopia came out in 2008, but it’s been on my to-listen-to list ever since.  CYNE worked for three years on the wonderful sounding album, and this track’s Barry White background vocals are only a sample of the soul to be found.  Don’t adjust your RAM - the song skips in the beginning.

FLASHBACK PICK:

:Little 7 - Sneakers (Featuring Hass CB):  I wasn’t able to dig up much information about Little 7, but odds are he’s a kid, and facts are he’s a sweet MC.  There wasn’t much that was more important in 1986 than your kicks, and this track demonstrates that obsession.

Leah Manners is the host of KOOP's (91.7 FM) Hip Hop Hooray, which airs on Sundays from 2pm to 3pm.  If you'd like to contact Leah in regards to her writings here at Side One: Track One then please do so here.
