Well, the first day of this
year's Fun Fun Fun Fest has come and gone, and I had a great time.
Below you'll find a quick recap and pictures of everything that I saw.
Enjoy.
By the way, remember to follow me on
Twitterfor live updates!
I sort of
already let loose many of my thoughts on Twitter yesterday,
but I still want to mention a few things for you to think
about while scrolling the pictures. So...
Best Saturday
Performance: Melt Banana
For all I know, this band could be made up of extremely
sweet and kind people. However, when on stage they're
somewhat insane, and it is an absolute blast to watch.
Still don't know if I'd want to casually sit around the
house and listen to their noise punk ways, but if I were to
start something against the world I feel confident that Melt
Banana could comfortably serve as my war band.
Too bad they aren't play Sunday.
Most Surprising
Saturday Performance: Crystal Antlers
I've been trying for a long while to really get into Crystal
Antler's latest record, but aside from Andrew and
another song or two I've found the release to be almost
unlistenable. Still, I wanted to see if their music
would undergo the Times New Viking effect live (it's where
overly fuzzed out noise pop becomes good indie rock), and
that's essentially what happened. Don't know if I'll
ever fall in the love with their album, but if they come
back to town I'll certainly try to be there.
Band Who Screamed
Potential: The Sword
I realize that the Sword has long been totally badass, but
this was the second time this year that I've been left super
impressed by their new material. Watch out world, the
Sword may soon be coming to force you to throw up a rock
fist and enter into uncontrollable headbanging.
Other Thoughts:
Watching Les
Savy Fav is a weird experience. I can't remember a
damn song they played last night, but I certainly know every
shenanigan that went down. Is that good or bad?
Seeing the great Shonen Knife play was an honor. Wish
they had done an afterparty or something.
Hey Yeasayer! Sitting on stage 15 minutes after your
set is supposed to start and asking for just a little more
kick drum in the stage right monitor is incredibly stupid.
Just get up there and play.
Hey Ratatat! Try to be ready to play next time.
Or, if that isn't the case, buy equipment that works.
Starting your set and then stopping for almost 15 minutes is
incredibly stupid.
