Today's
Quick Mention: As was the case with Animal
Collective earlier this year, people are claiming that
Grizzly Bear's new album is the greatest thing ever released
in all of 2009 (even the parts that haven't happened yet).
I'm not sure I see the big, jaw dropping deal (for either
band's efforts, honestly), but what I've heard I've liked.
Anyone want to send over all of Veckatimest?
I'd like to see if it blows my mind too.
Here's the second EP of the week.
Enjoy.
:All
Smiles - The One I Want To Live:
I should have shared this long ago, but for whatever reason
I've been keeping it to myself and wondering why I haven't
seen it mentioned everywhere. It makes no sense.
Anyhow, All Smiles is Jim Fairchild of Grandaddy and Modest
Mouse fame, which means that before you even hit play you
should expect to hear a song that's well crafted, pop and
nifty (actually, the same goes for all of the new LP).
Oh For The Getting And Not Letting Go is due out June
30.
:Karen
Dalton - In The Evening (It's So Hard To Tell Who Is Going
To Love You):
SOTO's very own Noah Sanders sent me an email last week
demanding that I listen to Karen because he "knew" I would
love it. He was right. Karen's voice is perfect
- really something that you can listen to over and over
again because it's a goddamn delight to not just your ears,
but your soul. The good people over at Light In The
Attic just reissued It's So Hard To Tell Who Is Going To
Love You. Buy it on vinyl. For me. For
my birthday, which is on June 7.
:Lightning
Dust - I Know:
Where Black Mountain completely ruled my world last year
with one of the better outright rock albums in a long time,
they're now taking up all my time with their side projects
in 2009. First there was Stephen McBean's new Pink
Mountaintops effort, and now there is this sophomore record
from vocalist Amber Webber and Joshua Wells. I think
you might be surprised at how dynamic and fresh this sounds.
JagJaguwar will put out Infinite Light in August.
:The
Rest - Walk On Water (Auspicious Beginnings):
When I listen to how all over the place this song is I get
the feeling that this Canada-based band wasn't exactly sure
where they were going with it, but I think the, for lack of
a better term, sloppiness may also be the main reason I dig
it. Could they of gone with just a straight forward
pop sound? Sure, so kudos to them for that added
little bit of unpredictability. Indiecater Records
just released Everyone All At Once.
:Little
Big Adventure - Happiest Times:
As was the case with the song that kicked off today's
collection of tunes, this also should have shared a while
back. It's from this band's latest EP, which is titled
The Hateful Eye, and it's just about the most groovy
mellow tune that you'll find anywhere. How the hell
does Labrador always manage to have such cool acts?
I've never heard anything bad from that label. At any
rate, that EP is available now.
