This past week I’ve been drowning in a pile of papers to
write, so this week I’ve got a quick playlist for you. Think
of it as a forecast of reviews (or maybe interviews) to
come.
:The
Great Nostalgic - Young Lovers:
The Great Nostalgic (with members of Sea Legs) released
their new self-titled LP this past week at Hole in the Wall
with Sunset, The Sour Notes, and a bunch of other
bands/remixes I would have loved to have seen had I not been
so embattled with work. Having listened to the whole
album, I can say I’m kicking myself even more: it’s full of
energy that’s been ingeniously translated into tight New
Wave-esque arrangements of synths and guitars. Rest
assured, I’ll be talking more about this band in the coming
weeks.
:Leatherbag
- Amy:
For years now, Leatherbag (aka Randy Reynolds) has been
making promising records, each one brimming with potential
to be great records (and not just "local" great). With two
recent EP’s, a new backing band (made up of members of
Jude/Ross, see below), a scheduled stop at this year’s ACL
festival and the brilliant mining of some of rock’s great
forgotten bands, Leatherbag may very well be on a trajectory
to release something worth of all this promise of
"promise." Check out Amy, from the new Everything I Once
Knew EP.
:JudeRoss
- Evelynn:
The new self-titled Jude/Ross records, produced by Randy
Reynolds (see above), is downright excellent. I’ll likely
be mentioning them again soon, but for now it’s sufficient
to say that this record is classic. If you like this track,
Evelynn, the rest of the record flows just as easy.
They’re up at the Mohawk on the 12th, go see them,
seriously.
:White
Denim - Mirrored And Reversed:
You can read about the new stuff from White Denim all over
the nets by now. The new album is certainly a departure
from their older material, to some extent, and is at first
listen slightly less caustic than what I’ve become accustom
to from them. This song is off their upcoming UK release,
Fits, which will hopefully be out in the states
sometime this year.
:The
Georgian Company - Apology:
There’s an excellent review on the Austinist of the new
alt-country act The Georgian Company’s new EP, Side A,
in which reviewer Adi Anand declares: "The Georgian Company
harvest a sound true to Texas - it’s the perfect soundtrack
to the day when you play hooky from work and let the
sunlight in through your open windows. And equally
fitting for the long Saturday morning drive on the highway
to your parents’ house after a month of turmoil."
That’s certainly better than I could have said it.
Apology is the best cut from their new EP, which rumor
has it will be followed soon by another.
:The
Seas - French Toast:
Indie-poppers The Seas hit us up with an EP two years ago,
and they’ve just now gotten ‘round to releasing their debut
LP, Let’s Fake It. Before anyone says "David Byrne,"
check out the great moments of dissonance on this new track,
French Toast. Currently, no local gigs for The Seas,
but keep your ear to the ground.
