I feel as if I'm returning from a huge vacation, what with
the holiday weekend and Johnny Boy Laird falling off the map
for a moment. And all that's given me is the opportunity to
really dig in deep to a pretty solid collection of new music
(so only expect "The Good" this week).
Again, I'll admit, a lot of my recent listens have strayed
towards the more garage-y and this trend has not come to any
sort of end. If it's fuzzy, or distorted, and kicked up a
with a solid little bass-beat, I'm probably interested.
As always, thanks for reading.
Who/What:
Ganglians - Lost Words
Where'd I Find It:
The always reliable Raven Sings The Blues
Why
Do I Like It:
If you've ever listened to Ganglians, as I have in the past,
you might associate them more with experimental noise,
wrapped around churning garage. Their new album Monster
Head Room is, as far as I can tell, a drastic change
from that. There's still that element of noise - hissing,
booming noise - but, it's touched up with a sort of
psychedelic harmonization I haven't heard in the past from
these guys. This is sort of acid-pop, music that fills the
cracks in your subconscious with a sort of sun-soaked ooze
you can't help but enjoy.

Who/What:
Thee Oh Sees - Tidal Wave
Where'd I Find It:
On the dusty shelves of my local record store.
Why
Do I Like It:
I'm kind of a Thee Oh Sees nerd - I've seen them live
countless times, own most of their albums, and freak out,
just a little bit, whenever I know they have a new release.
Well, with nary a moment to breath, Jon Dwyer's little
outfit has released this Tidal Wave 7" hot on the
heels of their recent album Help. It's a lot like
any Oh Sees song, a sort of melodic push swathed in
distortion. But there is something about Tidal Wave
that just sounds a little different, a little more
surf-rock, a little less Dwyer. It's beautiful and another
solid entry in this incredible band's catalog.

Who/What:
Akron/Family - Last Year
Where'd I Find It:
At the tail end of an album I'm not that excited about.
Why
Do I Like It:
You know, I'm not that big of a fan of the new Akron/Family
album. It sort of meanders and saunters around a bunch of
different genres, but in the end it's just a little too
hokey for me. This song though, the chorale hum of Last
Year, just absolutely does it for me. It hits me in the
soft spots, and though it only runs a minute, I find myself
a little misty in the peepers, each and every go around.

Who/What:
Ducktails - Daily Vacation
Where'd I Find It:
On the beautiful new album from Ducktails.
Why
Do I Like It:
I went on a Ducktails binge two weeks ago. Picked up
everything I could find of there's, sought out strange side
projects, rolled in the breezy sound this New Jersey-based
artist was laying on me. And I'm still not spent. The new
album is all over the place, but songs like Daily
Vacation stick to the sort of snoozy tropical feel of
Beach Point Pleasant and it's been absolutely perfect
for my tired afternoons.
