Today's
Quick Mention: Did you guys see that Comedy
Central has ordered a full season of Futurama?
I think that might be the best TV-related news I've gotten
in a very long time.
Here's an EP.
Enjoy.
:The
Mummers - Sleepyhead (Passion Pit Cover):
In the last podcast I shared a nice pop number from this
band and mentioned that I'd like to hear this particular
cover. Well, here it is. For the most, I do like
the original version, but I think the Mummers' whimsical
touch makes it much more accessible and, dare I say, better.
The band's debut Tale To Tell just came out yesterday
on Big Bass Drum Records. I think you should seriously
consider picking it up.
:Mike
Kuehn - I'm Getting Pretty Good At Giving Up:
If you spend your time scouring liner-notes then you may
have already recalled that Mike was the recorder/mixer for
the last Most Serene Republic album. Or perhaps you
did no such thing. Either way, he's got some solo
stuff that's essentially indie rock with a nice touch of
pop, and I think you'll find it rather appealing. I'm
not really sure when the I'm Getting Pretty Good At
Giving Up EP will be released, but it's worth keeping an
eye out for.
:Zero
7 - Everything Up:
This is not a band that I've longed wished would get back to
making music (all I've ever really needed from them is the
electronic gem In The Waiting Line), but then I never
thought they'd just pop up and jump right into the swing of
things so strongly. Now, and I'm being totally
seriously, their upcoming effort is one that I'm really
excited about hearing. Too bad that Yeah Ghost
isn't due out until September 8.
:Signal
Hill - The Dead Vineyard:
Some of my favorite instrumental rock bands are the ones
that slowly build to a thunderous climax (for example, Mono,
Explosions In The Sky), but I also really like acts like
this that just have songs. No need to wait on anything
to "happen", it's all there in one interesting package and
your only job is to sit back and listen. This LA-based
band's new full length carries the title More After We're
Gone, and I believe it's available now.
:The
Skygreen Leopards - Dixie Cups In The Dead Grass:
It seems that at least once a week a band comes along that I
feel as if I should have known about years ago. This
week, it's this JagJaguwar artist out of San Francisco.
Obviously, I can't comment on how this is/isn't different
than what they've done in the past, so I'll just point out
that I like it's summer-appropriate sound, and then leave it
at that. Gorgeous Johnny will be released July
21.
