Today's
Quick Mention: Three things: 1) I'm still
feeling the good times that came out of the Black Moth Super
Rainbow/School Of Seven Bells/Balmorhea show at the Mohawk
this past Tuesday. See BMSR if you get the chance!
2) I saw Passion Pit and Harlem Shakes last night. It
was great. 3) There are plenty of shows that I just
attend and tweet about instead of doing a full review with
pictures, so if you aren't
following me then do so for a little extra
content!
Here's an EP to help make your day that much better.
Enjoy.
:Sir
Lord Von Raven - I Do:
On occasion I receive albums in the mail that have the
dreaded no-win trifecta of terrible artwork, bad album title
and silly band name, and I just assume I'm about to have my
semi-precious time wasted. Normally, I'm right to
assume such a thing, but in regards to this effort I was way
off. SLVR's Please Throw Me Back In The Ocean
is all vintage, but it bounces around nicely between garage
rock, pop and punk, and it's good. Seek it out on
Happy Parts Records when you get the chance.
:Dark
Mean - Happy Banjo:
This band included a whole bunch of info about how they were
created out of a desire to do a soundtrack for a play and
that they'll have some other EPs coming out in the next year
or two, but none of that really matters. You only need
to know that headphones, four minutes and 22 seconds and a
love for pretty pop songs are all you need to see that this
is a talented bunch. The Frankencottage EP is
available now, and you can get it free on the band's
website. Hooray!
:Holiday
Shores - Phones Don't Feud:
It's easy to think of "summer tunes" only as energetic, loud
pieces of music that inspire you to get off your ass and out
into the beautiful weather, but I think there's another side
to that, and it's breezy, lackadaisical tracks like this.
Instead of frolicking in the heat, you'll probably just want
to hang out on the backporch and stare off into space.
Nothing wrong with that, right? Columbus'd The Whim
is due on Twosyllable Records in August.
:Circulatory
System - Overjoyed:
I feel as though I should already be well aware of this
band's other efforts and/or the fact that many of its
members used to be in a supposedly well-respected act known
as the Olivia Tremor Control. But I'm not. In
fact, this song is my introduction to all that information.
And you know what? I want more, especially if it's the
same sort of fuzzed out rock. So, feel free to throw
out some recommendations from either group. Signal
Morning is due on Cloud Recordings in September.
:Bombadil
- Honeymoon:
The last time I heard from Bombadil they were sounding like
Langhorne Slim's calmer, more pop than alt-country brother,
and I liked it a lot. And now? Well, now I'd say
they're more like a distant cousin that lives in the city.
The country-leanings are still there, but it's glossed over
with a lush arrangement and grandiose vocals. No
worries though, I still like it a lot. July 7 marks
the date in which you should be able to find Tarpits And
Canyonlands on store shelves.
