Today's
Quick Mention: I'm thinking about buying a pass
for the currently happening Paramount Theatre Summer Film
Series. It doesn't end until September, and you can
get 10 movies for just $45, which is a great deal.
Who's with me?
And now for an EP to help start the week. Enjoy.
:Monsters
Of Folk - Say Please:
I'm all about super groups, but I have to admit that when
this was announced the only thing I cared about was finding
whoever let Conor Oberst, Jim James and M. Ward call
themselves Monsters Of Folk. I mean, isn't folk
supposed to be the less-egotistical of all the genres?
In any case, this rocking (complete with guitar solo) first
single is impressive, and if we're lucky all of the upcoming
self titled debut will have a bunch of stuff that's just as
interesting. Look for it on Shangri-La on September
22.
:Fruit
Bats - The Ruminant Band:
For what seems like an eternity now I've been trying to at
least appreciate the first single, My Unusual Friend,
off of the Fruit Bats' upcoming full length, but I've had
this nagging problem where every time I listen to it I fall
asleep. Fortunately, just as I was really thinking
about giving up, the title track arrived with a big bag of
classic rock goodies and restored my faith that their new LP
could be worth my time. Sub Pop will release it on
August 4.
:Atlas
Sound - Walkabout (Featuring Panda Bear):
I actually prefer Atlas Sound to Deerhunter when it comes to
Bradford Cox, so it was certainly nice for me when last week
ended with a new song and the announcement that they'll be
playing this year's Fun Fun Fun Fest. As for the
track, it's nice - a real gem worthy of blaring for the rest
of the summer. Although, I honestly still don't get
what the big deal is about Panda Bear. Atlas Sound's
Logos is expected to hit store shelves via Kranky on
October 20.
:Ramona
Falls - Russia:
I've long loved Menomena, so I hate that I only just found
out that Brent Knopf put together a solo effort under the
moniker of Ramona Falls. On the other hand, I became
aware of it when the album arrived in the mail, so at least
I didn't have to eagerly await anything. And trust me,
after hearing this beautiful song I would have certainly
been on the edge of my seat in anticipation. Purchase
Intuit when it comes out on Barsuk in mid-August.
Or else.
:Vivian
Girls - When I'm Gone:
It wasn't until this number landed in my inbox that I
realized it, but I'm almost to the point of being "done"
with this group. Now, that isn't to say they aren't a
quality act, I just can't tell their songs apart anymore.
All of them seem to feature the same of everything.
Who knows though, perhaps the the trio will change this
evolving opinion of mine when Everything Goes Wrong
(totally not the right album name for this situation) when
it arrives September 8 on the Red Label.
