Today's Quick Mention: While it unfortunately is not posted up
in a convenient song-by-song format, I've been really loving the "Songs
About Other Musicians"
mixtape
that Mannequin Men put together. Check it out immediately, and then do
as I plan to do and return to the same place next week for more.
A couple of years ago I decided to weather an Arctic Monkeys set in order to
squeeze up front for the Arcade Fire at ACL, and it left convinced that they
were as I had always thought of them - OK. Since then my opinion
hasn't changed much, but with the arrival of a pretty rocking new single I'm
ready to see if their next effort will bring me around. Humbug
is out August 25 on Domino. Enjoy.
:Arctic
Monkeys - Crying Lightning:
It's possible that it's just me, but this sounds like the
grown-up Arctic Monkeys that I may have always been
subconsciously waiting for. Sure, there is still that
particularly strong hint of mainstream modern rock that
they've always had, but it's feels tighter, better made and
groovy enough that I won't mind hearing 25 times a day when
it hits radio. Definitely give it a chance if you've
been on the fence when it comes to these English rockers.
