Today's Quick Mention:  I'm pretty much a highlights-only fan of tennis, but watching Andy Roddick and Roger Federer battle it out at Wimbledon yesterday was great fun.  Makes me think I need to at least check out the Grand Slams.

It seems as if everyone owns a label these days, so unless an effort carries a name that's been around for awhile I don't really take much notice of where an artist may currently be calling home.  With that being said, there are a few "little" operations that I do regularly follow, and one in particular is Abandoned Love Records (Lovely Sparrows, Nire), who just released a new EP from Virgin Of The Birds titled Every Rival.  It's free and very good, so get it.  Enjoy.

:Virgin Of The Birds - Every Rival:  ALR's owner, Jon Rooney is also the main brain behind Virgin Of The Birds, so it isn't much of a surprise that his approach to things is a light mix of the warm sounding, quirky lyric-filled folk acts that he has worked with over the years.  Personally, I think it makes for a very refined and accessible listen, but I also get a zillion emails a day from people trying too hard to be singer/songwriters, so perhaps I'm just happy to have finally run across a gem from the genre.
