Where have the major blockbusters gone? I thought each and
every weekend of this miserable season of films was supposed
to be jam packed with stupidity, explosions, and popular
1980s toy lines finally pushed to the big screen.
This week though, we've got a Michael Mann film, the third
in a series of abysmal animated films, and a Nia Vardalo
flick. There just isn't the halo of blockbuster stench I've
become so used to. Not that I'm particularly excited about
this weeks releases, but still, at least I'm not retching in
my mouth.
As always, thanks for reading.
Hitting Theaters This Weekend:
PUBLIC ENEMIES
Director:
Michael Mann
Cast:
Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotilliard
Summary:
The rise and fall of famed 1930s gangster John Dillinger
(Johnny Depp) at the obsessive hands of FBI agent Melvin
Purvis (Christian Bale).
Thoughts:
My personal feelings for this movie have ranged towards
ecstatic - Depp, Bale, and Mann filming a flick about
gangsters of the 1930s? Shit spasms, I'm all over it.
Critical reviews have been a little lukewarm, but eff the
critics, this has edgy crowd-pleaser spray painted all over
it.
Rotten Tomatoes Score:
63%
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS
Director: Carlos
Saldanha, Mike Thurmeier
Cast:
Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary
Summary:
The third in the Ice Age series of films, this one
finds the bewildered trio of Ice Age animals dealing with
the onset of the dinosaur movement.
Thoughts:
The saw the first one of these films in the theatre. These
aren't terrible films, they just aren't great. Bereft of
pop culture references, they're certainly more entertaining
than the Shrek films, but I'd still watch the editing
room scraps of Pixar's worst, than sit through this gag-reel
of pointless humor.
Rotten Tomatoes Score:
46%
I HATE VALENTINE'S DAY
Director:
Nia Vardalo
Cast:
Nia Vardalo, John Corbett
Summary:
A florist and a restaurant owner ... insert stereotypical
romantic comedy plot here.
Final Thoughts:
No limited release pick again this week, so that means it's
Public Enemies or a long jump off a short cliff for
this cynical sum'bitch.
And that's all she wrote.
