Today's
Quick Mention: I saw that Pitchfork and Idolator
both ran stories yesterday about the OiNK users and the
fines and community service that the judge handed down to
them. I thought they made out pretty well, but perhaps
I'm just cool with anything that doesn't involved jail.
Any thoughts? Was it fair or unnecessary?
And now I have an EP for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy.

Nadler - River Of Dirt:
The weather in
Austin is usually pretty good, but yesterday it was foggy
and misting, which actually ended up being a perfect fit for
this song and its dreamy sound. Yes, I realize that
probably sounds a little boring, however, I think once you
listen you'll find yourself fairly enthralled. Just
remember to put on some headphones first. Little
Hells is due out March 3.
:Dan
Auerbach - The Prowl:
To be honest,
this project sort of confuses me, especially when Dan
describes it as a mixture of music that he likes. Was
that not what he was doing in the Black Keys? I mean,
this really doesn't sound that different than what was on
Attack And Release. Anyhow, despite the wonky
reasoning, I still like what this guy does, so I'll
certainly seek out Keep It Hid when it gets released
on Nonesuch Records on February 10.
:Penny
Century - Valencia:
"I am not
saying you are stupid/But you're wrong" It's no
secret, 2008 was a pretty damn good year for sugary sweet
Swedish pop music. And 2009? It'll probably be
just as good, but right now it seems as if many of the acts
over there are switching it up and venturing out a bit.
I've already posted up a few that weren't what would
normally be expected, and now I've got this, which is pop at
its core but certainly not shy about showing some love for
the sounds of yesteryear. The Valencia EP is
out now.
:Wild
Light - California On My Mind:
Admittedly, I wasn't really feeling this band's radio ready
pop rock ways when I first gave it a listen. But, as
is just totally necessary sometimes, I shut off the brain,
found a little objectivity and discovered that they're
really quite enjoyable - the kind of music that fills a room
nicely. Their album, Adult Nights, will be out
on March 3, and if you're in town on Thursday you can catch
them with Tapes N' Tapes at one of the best venues in town,
the Parish.
:Eula
- Housewolf:
Spastic is most
definitely an understatement when trying to describe what
this band is trying to do with their sound. In fact, I
think that there will be a large number of you who will very
easily find plenty of things to love AND hate about it.
Personally, I think it's a fun listen that hints at a whole
lot of potential, and I hope that their Language Of
Threat EP is full of the same. Expect to find out
in March.
