Today's
Quick Mention: Anyone else seen Chandhi Chowk
To China? The wife and I ventured to South Austin
over the weekend to see (experience is probably the more
appropriate word, but whatever) it and we ended up being
blown away by its sheer zaniness. Bollywood Kunk Fu
Epics are awesome.
Here's an EP. Enjoy.
:Deastro
- Parallelogram:
For whatever
reason I missed out on climbing aboard the Deastro bandwagon
when he released his debut a few years back, but I'm more
than ready to be the first one on in support of his
sophomore effort if the whole thing is going to be full of
dreamy pop gems like this one. I simply can't get this
thing out of my head. Ghostly International is
set to put out Moondogger sometime this year.
:1990s
- The Box:
I think I'd be
hard-pressed to come up with a thorough list of guilty
pleasure acts if suddenly asked, but if forced to at least
throw out a couple of recommendations then I have no doubt
that the 1990s would end up being one of them. They
just seem to thrive on slinging around sounds and lyrics
that are suppose to make you suddenly find yourself in
mid-dance with a big smile on your face. I only know
that this is a new single, so keep an eye our for more
information from Rough Trade Records.
:Julie
Doiron - Consolation Prize:
It has been
almost two years since I last mentioned Julie (the track was
called No More), but she left enough of an impression
on me that when I saw her name in my inbox I immediately
skipped to it with the hope that it held some music.
Obviously, it did, but to make things even better the song
turned out to be another notch in 2009's so-far-so-great
indie rock belt. I Can Wonder What You Did With
Your Day is due out on Jagjaguwar in March.
:Padre
Pio - Madeline:
Admittedly, there is something kind of odd about this song.
Some of it sounds very familiar, more of it feels off - it's
just weird. Fortunately though, it's also good.
I've repeatedly found myself sitting around and appreciating
the season-appropriate music and the rather interesting way
that the whole thing moves and unfolds. The
Madeline EP is out now.
:Dirty
Projectors And David Byrne - Knotty Pine:
When I first
saw these two names listed together I thought that it was
some awesome project that I had completely missed out on.
Well, it is, but not in the way that I was thinking.
It's actually for a compilation called Dark Was The Night,
which features 31 exclusive tracks from the likes of Arcade
Fire, Spoon and many more, that's due out on February 17 and
benefits the Red Hot Organization. That's good stuff,
but I have to admit that an entire album of this kind of
glorious pop would be great.
