Today's Quick Mention: I spent part of the weekend trying to
figure out what people like about Lupe Fiasco's new band,
Japanese
Cartoon, but I just don't get it. His bad accent, the hollow music, the
terrible songwriting - is it really excusable because of who he is?
Someone explain.
Over the last year the Austin-based Dead Oceans has became one of my
favorite labels, so it should go without saying that I'm more than ready to
see what they have planned for 2009. First up, from what I can tell,
is the Seattle-based Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. Keep an eye out in
March for what will surely be a nifty effort in disguise as their self
titled debut. Enjoy.

St. Helens Vietnam Band - Anchors Dropped:
This is a nice
song. The bit of playfulness in the guitars is easy on
the ears, it's just catchy enough, the lyrics are
interesting and, perhaps most importantly, it makes me want
to hear it live. Hard to ask for more than that, I
think. Although, requesting that all indie rock this
year moves with this sort of energy may not be a terrible
idea.
