Today's
Quick Mention: I saw Gran Torino the other
night. It was pretty good, but the fact that Clint
Eastwood sounded like Christian Bale's Batman kind of
bothered me. I mean, why is he championed for his two
hours of growling when Bale is widely frowned upon for what
amounts to roughly five minutes of the same thing?
Bizarre, I say!
Here's an EP to help me get a little closer to being caught
up. Enjoy.

JKS - Lakeside:
I've looked all
over, but for the life of me I can't figure out how this
song and its TV On The Radio meets the 80s sound ended up in
my review folder. Was it fate? Probably not.
That's just crazy. I think. At any rate, you
should grab a good pair of headphones before you let this
take a shot at winning you over. The band's Mystery
EP is available now, but you can only get it digitally
or on vinyl.

Pixels - So You Say:
One of the big
things that people seem to be stuck on with this act is that
they feature five people from four different countries.
Who cares!? Their sound is gloriously upbeat and
worthy of placement in any 80s movie that ever needed a
montage, and that's all you need to know. So You
Say can be found now as the b-side on the Words Are
Poison single.

(ne) - Little Things:
I honestly don't even remember this act's 2006 debut,
Heavy Hands, so you're on your own when it comes to how
their sound has or hasn't changed. Sorry. I will
say this though, they're the kind of simplistic indie rock
that Saddle Creek has consistently released for years, and
that in itself is enough to get me excited about Dusk.
It's due out February 3.
:CFCF
- Crystal Mines:
This artist is apparently already well known for his remixes
of Sally Shipiro, The Presets, HEALTH, The Teenagers,
Crystal Castles and Hearts Revolution (I've heard none of
them), which I suppose means that I should be psyched about
his upcoming debut for Paper Bag Digital. Well, I am,
but only because this is one hell of an instrumental track.
I want more. The Panesian Nights EP will be
available on January 20.
:Ume
- Sunshower:
I only saw a
few moments of this local act's set at Fun Fun Fun Fest, but
the thunderous couple of songs that I heard were enough to
get me really exited when word of their new EP arrived
yesterday via email. Trust me when I say that they're
well on their way to being known and appreciated outside of
Austin. The Sunshower EP is due out February
24.
