Today's
Quick Mention: I realized yesterday that I didn't
watch one single second of either the Pro Bowl or the
Grammys. A large part of me doesn't feel like I
missed anything, but if you'd like to correct me on that
then feel free to unload your thoughts in the comments
section.
Here's your seemingly weekly (I wonder how long I can keep
this up) EP.
Enjoy.
:The
Dark Water Hymnal - Furrows:
"Bring your ears, Bring your hearts" To be honest, I
laughed when I saw this subject line sitting in my inbox.
Then, as should always be done first, I actually read the
thing and realized that it was The Dark Water Hymnal, who
are one of my favorite local acts, and I knew that it was
actually very fitting. I mean, you just aren't doing
it right unless you have a pair of headphones and a
willingness to open up and really listen - that's
when the light will come on and your breath will be taken
away. Trust me. As Above, So Below is due
out in Austin on March 2, and everywhere else in April.
You have to pick it up.
:Laura
Gibson - Spirited:
I'm really late in realizing that Laura had anything new to
share, but if you're one of those that don't crawl the
internet constantly and missed out then you'll be happy to
get this. Personally, I'm most excited to hear that
Laura is still doing songbird-with-a-twist when she could
very easily throw in some bouncy synths, phone the Apple
marketing department and call it a day. Way to go,
Laura! Beast Of Seasons can be expected on
store shelves in two weeks.
:Don't
Be A Stranger - Mon-chi-chi:
As I read Don't Be A Stranger's press release (it recounts
their journey from a small Swedish village to where they're
at now) and listen to this gem I can't help but think of the
word whimsical. Obviously, all that they do helps
contribute to that, but I think the majority of it has to do
with vocalist Liv Widell, who sounds so versatile that she
allows the band the freedom to be so playful and full of
life with the music. Frutti De Mare is set to
be released by Cheap Lullaby Records on April 9.
:The
Interiors - A Crooked Line:
Much of this Chicago-based band's debut is full of rather
upbeat, guitar-centric numbers that you'd probably like
quite a bit, but the song that jumps out the most to me is
actually this quieter number. In fact, I'd even say
that it and its hushed vocals, slinky percussion and catchy
guitar riffs are the best they have to offer. I just
might never get its magical rhythm out of my head.
Their self titled effort is out now.
:Black
Math Horseman - Deerslayer:
I have to say that I'm curious about what your reaction to
this will be, as it is the sort of ethereal psych-rock that
you don't just throw on in the background. It needs
all of your attention. That certainly isn't bad or
anything (especially when you realize you just spent six
incredible minutes swaying back and forth with your eyes
closed and your hands in the air), but you should prepare
yourself from something other than easily accessible.
Tee Pee Records will release WYLLT on April 21.
