Today's Quick Mention: I think I'm going to try and make the effort
to see the Sword at the Mohawk this weekend. Anyone else thinking
about going? My show-loving instincts are telling me that it will
probably be a pretty damn good time.
And now to end the week with too much music. Enjoy.
:Rodrigo
Y Gabriela - Buster Voodoo:
Despite having been around for quite some time, I don't know
much about this duo or their music. I mean, there was
that one time I saw them perform on ESPN2, but I don't
believe that counts. At any rate, I think it's time I
got with the program and started paying attention to them,
and this wildly entertaining track is a good starting point.
Feel free to recommend more while I patiently await until
September 7 for 11:11 to be released.
:Islands
- Vapours:
I try to stay away from liking a band just because they're
different, but I honestly think that's the main reason that
I find these guys so appealing. They just seem to do
whatever and make the sort of music that's either super
bizarre, incredibly accessible or a mixture of both.
This, unlike the weird first single that was No You Don't,
is definitely an easy one to love if you dig good pop music.
The band's third full length, Vapours, is due out via
the great Anti- on September 22.
:Alvin
Band - Temple Pressure:
I'm not even remotely sure how long that I've been listening
to and liking this, but it has taken me way too long to post
it up. Bummer. Anyhow, this is one of my
favorite electro-pop tunes from the summer, and I think
you'll really like how fresh and enthusiastic that it
sounds. Be sure to be on the lookout for Mantis
Preying if you find yourself wandering aimlessly in your
local record store wishing that you had something to drop a
few bucks on.
:The
School - And Suddenly:
A few weeks back I mentioned that Slumberland Records had a
rather awesome split 7" series going on titled Searching
For The Now. Well, this perfect little vintage pop
gem is just one more reason for you to get on with buying
the whole series. That's right, the whole series.
Food and rent are not priorities when it comes to stuff this
good. Sorry. By the way, this song can currently
be found along side a couple of others from George
Washington Brown on Searching For The Now 6.
:The
Rifles - The Great Escape:
One of my favorite guilty pleasures is over-produced modern
rock. You know, the kind that when you hear it you
vividly imagine the frontman singing and pointing to the sky
while his bandmates are playing every note as if it's not
just their last, but also the hardest. Awesome, right?
Yes, yes it is, and until being slick is illegal I'm going
to be rocking stuff like this forever. Do yourself a
favor and pick up the band's sure to be fun debut The
Great Escape on September 15.
