Today's
Quick Mention: Is it weird that I want to go see
the Counting Crows tonight at the Austin Music Hall?
I kind of think it is, but only because I haven't actively
listened to them since I was a teenager, and the "urge" just
sort of came out of nowhere. Anyone ever caught one of
their shows?
Here's an EP. Enjoy.

Me The Statue - Hi-Fi Goon:
With so much stuff flying around in my head I tend to forget
about actual release dates and such until they've already
come and gone, but one that I've not forgotten is tomorrow,
August 4, because that's when this band's sophomore full
length comes out. It will be incredible. I mean,
just listen to this pop gem and try to think otherwise!
The LP is titled Creaturesque and the always great
Secretly Canadian will be distributing it to the masses.
:Owen
- Good Friends, Bad Habits:
Cap'n Jazz, Joan Of Arc, American Football, Owls, Maritime,
Aloha, The One Up Downstairs. I know there are plenty
of artists that get around and seem to be involved in
everything, but there aren't many that do it as well as Mike
Kinsella does. Talk about staying busy with quality
work. Anyhow, Owen has always been home to the more
quiet and sincere part of Mike, so that's would you should
expect out of this nice track. Polyvinyl will release
New Leaves in September.
:The
Daze - Blizzard Woman Blues:
It could just be me (and John Michael, actually), but there
doesn't seem to have been very many local releases this
summer. Fortunately though, things look as if they're
going to pick up nicely as we inch closer to the fall, and
one of the bands helping that happen is this trio.
Here's hoping that all of their upcoming full length is
packed with raucous rock tracks as good as this one.
Straightjacket Hymns is due out on August 27.
:Emmy
The Great - She Almost Had A Baby:
"I'll let you know if you have to come and choose a name"
Lyrics are always a big part of any song for me, but I swear
that I hummed this tune for about a week before I actually
listened to the words and realized that it wasn't as sweet
as I had first thought. I blame the singer's snazzy
songbird vocals. Supposedly, this track is an
alternate version of the one that graced last year's We
Almost Had A Baby, but Emmy The Great did just put out
an EP titled Edward. Anyone have it?
:Datarock
- True Stories:
A number of years ago I saw these guys put on a rather
entertaining set at SXSW, and since then I've sort of
avoided their albums as a way to preserve their all-out live
sound in my head. So why the change of heart?
They're coming to Austin on September 25, I want you to be
there and this pretty fun number should convince you to buy
a ticket. You can get Red via Nettwerk on the very
first day of next month. As for me, I still need to
get around to listening to the whole thing.
