Today's
Quick Mention: Don't forget that Record Store Day
is this upcoming Saturday! I know I'll be out and
about supporting the shops in Austin, and you should make
plans do the same (wherever you are). Get some details
here.
And now an EP to get things started off right.
Enjoy.
:Monahans
- Slow Burn:
For a few weeks now I've been trying to immerse myself in
the Monahans upcoming full length, but it hasn't exactly
happened. Now, don't take that the wrong way, it is a
good effort. I think I've just been hook-hungry, which
isn't the right mindset for something that's packed with
slow burning (no pun intended), moody tracks. I'll
eventually come around to what the local act put together,
especially the more that I notice headphone-worthy gems like
this. Misra Records will release Dim The Aurora
on May 19.
:Rubies
- Stand In Line:
Over the weekend I was catching up on some stuff that had
been posted up in Pitchfork's Forkcast (my favorite part of
that site), and I noticed this rather fun little electro-pop
number. From what I gather, the band is made up of
Call And Response's Simone Rubi and Terri Loewenthal, and
they have a debut LP coming up for Telle in June titled
Explode From The Center (although, you can get a couple
of singles on iTunes now). I expect it to be pretty
good.
:Eulogies
- Day To Day:
"I left home and I went out on my own/I don't care if I'm
welcome anymore" Initially, I wasn't really a big fan
of Eulogies, but after a couple of listens I came to really
like how the band balances their attention-sucking lyrics
with upbeat and easily accessible arrangements. So, if
you want, you can get lost in the songwriting, or you can
just sing--a-long. Versatility is good. Here
Anonymous was released by Dangerbird Records last week.
:Brasstronaut
- Requiem For A Scene:
Once you move past this act's terrible name (seriously,
Brasstronaut was their best option?) you'll find one
wonderfully crafted song that sounds like a whole bunch of
genres randomly thrown together. Yes, I realize that
last part doesn't exactly gel with "well crafted", but you
try to properly describe what these people were going for,
because I certainly can't figure it out. This is one
of those times where I just know that I like it. The
Old World Lies EP is out now on Unfamiliar Records.
:Kasabian
- Underdog:
Admittedly, I've never paid any attention to this band and I
think their sound here is the sort of electronic-tinged
modern rock that can either be really cool or really
terrible when spread across a whole album, but I'm totally
digging it. Will it make me run out and buy their
other two efforts? Probably not. But I'll
definitely seek out The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum
when it hits store shelves in June. Thanks to
We
All Want Someone To Shout For for posting
this up.
