I hate to have to do this, but
because of work and Austin City Limits I'm going to have to cancel this
weekend's podcast and delay the film rundown until Monday. On the flip
side of things, there is a good chance that I'll now be in and around Zilker
Park for a large part of ACL, I'll for sure see Okkervil River, Man Man and
Crooked Fingers at Emo's and I might get to attend Conor Oberst, M. Ward and
Jenny Lewis at La Zona Rosa. Crazy!
Now check out this week-ending EP. Enjoy.

Young Gentleman - The Crook Of My Good Arm:
To be honest, I completely forgot about this act after I
posted up one of their songs last year. Fortunately
though, they avoid such silliness with SOTO, made a note and
then went about sending me their new full length, Black
Forest (Tra La La). It, like this track, has a
nifty sound that sort of straddles the fence between
belonging to either the summer or the fall, which I think
makes it a good transition record. You should check it
out when it hits store shelves in October via Science Of
Sound.
:Look
Mexico - You're Not Afraid Of The Dark Are You:
As shown by the scatterbrained press release that
accompanied their music, this isn't an easy band to peg down
when it comes to sound. For my money, and really just
for the sake of saying something, I think they do a pretty
good job of reminding me of those great indie rock bands of
the mid-90s that wore their heart on their sleeves so very
well. Good stuff. Lujo Records recently put out
the Gasp, Asp EP.
:Gentleman
Jesse And His Men - Butterfingers:
I ran across this song over at Pitchfork yesterday and sort
of immediately decided that I wanted to share it today.
At less than two minutes, it doesn't have much to offer in
the way of epic length or anything, but it does feature a
wealth of charm that shines very brightly through the music
and, in particular, the lyrics. The band's self titled
album is out now on one of the better named labels in human
history, Douchemaster.
:The
All Girl Summer Fun Band - Not The One For Me:
The first thing you should notice in this gem is that it's
so peppy that it forces you to think of those cheesy high
school flicks about teen angst and sour relationships.
Then, by the time you've done that, you'll realize that you
can't seem to forget the damn song no matter how hard you
try to - it just embeds its girl-power inspired indie rock
into your soul forever. Thank whoever I'm OK with
that. Looking In It is available now.
:Oh
Captain My Captain - On My Mind:
It's fairly difficult to find an indie rock act these days
that's actually doing something that hasn't already been
done, so one of my favorite things to do is find those that
are just doing it well. This, if you couldn't tell
already, is definitely one of those bands. I think you
should hit up Bladen County Records for a copy of the nicely
titled Relentlessly She Split The Sea.
