Just in case you forgot, Austin
City Limits is this weekend. I'm using the excuse of being shunned for
press credentials as my reason to not bother covering the festival, but I
will be out and around Zilker Park running broadcasts for the radio station
that I work for. How about you guys? Any of you actually jazzed
for this thing?
Here's an EP while you ponder. Enjoy.
:The
Piano Creeps - Hey Love:
This is an act that has quite a history despite the fact
that their upcoming full length is their debut. One
third of it is Billy Cote, who is the main brain behind
Madder Rose and Jazz Cannon, another part is Mary Lorson,
who has made three records with Saint Low and lastly is
Kathy Ziegler, who has a few solo efforts of her own under
her belt. In all honesty, I've never heard any of
those projects, but knowing that they're all so experienced
makes it easy to see why this sounds so good.
Future Blues (For Me And You) is due October 14.
:Medeski,
Martin And Wood - Free Go Lily:
I can't claim to be much of jazz fan, but one of the few
groups that I do like is this one since the three of them
always have something interesting going on. For
instance, their latest idea is to make three new albums that
will consist of repeating the process of writing new
material, playing only those songs on a tour and then
heading into the studio to put those specific tracks on an
album. Neat, right? The first is titled
RadioLarians I and it will be out at the end of the
month.
:Novillero
- A Little Tradition:
If you're looking for that one piece of pop in the EP that
will allow you to spend the rest of Monday tapping your foot
and singing-a-long then look no further, as this band from
Winnipeg has totally got you covered. Actually, if you
really want you can pick up a little momentum with this
number and then use it to explore their last two records and
the new one (this is the title track from it) that was just
released this month over at Mint. Empty those pockets!
:Little
Death - Baby Can You Dig Your Man:
"Man Alive!" This song already packs a big enough
sound to make even the most jaded of you at least
contemplate throwing up a rock first, but on my end it's the
energy and emphasis placed on certain lyrics that forces me
to consider such craziness. Here's hoping that their
upcoming untitled EP (due out in October) and the full
length (I believe this will be in the fall) that is set to
follow it are both loaded with the same sort of fierceness.
:Eagle
Seagull - I'm Sorry But I'm Beginning To Hate Your Face:
It seems like an eternity since this band's more than solid
debut was getting constant listens from me, so I'm pretty
happy that they've come roaring back by way of an
illustrious spot on mp3hugger's Indiecator: Volume 2.
Now if only they would churn out a new full length that's
completely stuffed from end to end with songs that are as
awesomely titled and Okkervil River-esque as this absolutely
wonderful pop tune.
