Well, today my good friend
Kendra turns 26. I'd like to wish her a super fat Happy Birthday, but
considering that we both have to be at work at 2am tomorrow, I'm thinking it
may actually be a good idea to do a belated sort of thing. Yeah for
awesome timing!
Anyhow, here's the second (never say I don't love you) EP of the week.
Enjoy.
:The
Lucksmiths - A Sobering Thought:
Speaking of Kendra, this is actually an group that she's
loved for a very long time. On my end, I've only been
on the bandwagon since they released that rather large
b-side compilation last year, but you can count me as
excited to hear what is surely another great entry into
their expansive catalog of pop music. The new full
length, which is called First Frost, is available for
order at this very moment over at Matinee Records.
:Angil
And Hiddntracks - Narrow Minds:
Originally started with the idea of creating an entire album
based around brass, woodwind instruments and a promise to
avoid the E key, this act has managed to form a sound that
feels like it should be a gimmick, but isn't. For the
most part, I think that's due to the choice of instruments
and the style of vocal delivery adding a touch of
theatricality to what could be an otherwise "normal" tune,
but it might just be because it's good.
Ouliposaliva will be out in January on Chmikal
Undrground.
:Zest
Of Yore - The Rejects:
As it turns out, the Eastern Sea were not the only band that
the Austinist's Local Music Is Sexy helped me discover.
Oddly enough though, Zest Of Yore weren't actually playing
that night (main brain Stephen was helping out with the
Lovely Sparrows), but through some quality conversations I
happened to land a copy of the new album, Quality Of Life,
which was made with a little help from Guided By Voice's
Doug Gilliard. At this point I've only given it a full
listen once, but I'll tell you now that I think it's a
pretty stellar piece of pop - sort of like a more quirky
Apples In Stereo. Somebody create a label and sign
them now.
:The
Henry Clay People - Something In The Water:
This an act that has a new record out on Aquarium Drunkard's
very own Autumn Tone Records, which I guess means that they
are blog-approved. Or something. At any rate,
word has it that their straightforward and almost classic
take on rock makes them one of Los Angeles best live shows,
so be sure to seem them if they come to a town near you.
The band's sophomore effort, For Cheap Or For Free,
is awaiting your sweet cash.
:Frontier
Ruckus - Orion Town Part 2:
I love bands like this. Not only do they come across
as very endearing and sincere in every aspect of what they
do, but they have just enough of a different sound (theirs
is of quasi-alt-country kind) to peak your curiosity.
From what I've been told they were a hit at CMJ, so while
the buzz may not be very loud at the moment I think we can
expect it to be at full tilt once the new year hits.
The Orion Songbook will be released early in 2009 via
the always awesome Quite Scientific.
