As many of you may have noticed, I don't really post a lot of remixes here at SOTO.  It's not that I think they're all horrible or anything, but for whatever reason a lot of them just don't appeal to me in any way.  With that being said, I do really like the Verve remix albums that have been released over the last few years.  I think that for the most part the artists that they bring on board to remix some of the greats of yesteryear tend to do a good job of "modernizing" the songs, so it works as a way to pay homage to those artists and introduce them to those who've never heard of them.  Anyhow, there's a new collection (it's the fourth and it features remixes of Nina Simone, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, etc) that was released yesterday and I highly recommend that you seek it out.  Enjoy.

:Marlena Shaw - California Soul (Diplo Remix):  Fortunately, Diplo didn't turn this classic into something that would make me throw up in my mouth and/or convulse violently.  If anything I'd say he actually managed to give it a little more kick.  I mean, the best part of the song is Marlena's killer voice, so for him to put together an arrangement that manages to steal even the slightest bit of my attention from her deserves some credit.  If only more remixes were this classy.

I was really hoping that Youtube would have some old grainy live footage or something, but all they had was a bunch of songs set to pictures.  So, I present to you Marlena Shaw and the song Women Of The Ghetto and a single shot of her simply looking beautiful.  Somehow it still works.
