With
the announcement that Iggy Pop will be doing a
tribute to Madonna at this year's Rock N' Roll Half
Of Fame inductions it got me thinking about unlikely
covers. So, I unearthed a few for your
listening pleasure. Enjoy.
:Charlotte
Martin - Obstacle 1 (Interpol Cover):
In my opinion this is an incredibly tough song to cover
since it is pretty much one of Interpol's best songs, and
you can't just do whatever and expect it to compare.
Fortunately, Charlotte doesn't try to change too much or be
wildly different. Instead, she keeps much of the
original intact while making it more of a creepy listen with
little goth-inspired details here and there.
:Kate
Nash - Men's Needs (Cribs Cover):
Hearing Kate actually do something that's not pretty and/or
bouncy took me a little while to get over, but once I did I
found that she did a fairly inspired take on this song.
The original is a mostly no-frills, indie pop rock number
that's meant to entertain, and that's about it. Kate's
version though switches it up by using a lot of acoustic
guitar and the fact that a woman and not a man is singing
the lyrics.
:Adele
- Last Nite (The Stroke Cover):
At no point can I say I've ever wanted to experience an Amy
Winehouse-esque version of this song, but that's what this
is and it's surprisingly great. I really like how the
arrangement is most left alone so that all of the focus is
on Adele, who is so good that she just might convince you
that she originally wrote this gem for the Strokes.
:Yael
Naim - Toxic (Britney Spears Cover):
Of all the covers here this is probably the least surprising
considering that the process of taking a huge hit and
completely flipping it has been done for years.
However, this is an infinitely interesting version of this
song and I don't want you to skip it because you're thinking
that it's just some run of the mill effort to get press or
something. Nope, this is worthy of many listens.
:The
Boy Least Likely To - Faith (George Michael Cover):
Why anyone would ever really want to be associated with
anything that George Michael created is beyond me.
With that being said, this is one hell of a cover. The
duo actually manage to take the cheekiness of the original
and turn it into a fantastic indie pop tune that doesn't
make you feel like the lamest person in existence when you
sing-a-long.
