Yeah! It's June!
Which means that this Saturday (the 7th) I'll be turning 25. That's
right, I'll be halfway to 50. Are you guys still going to want to read
an old man's rambles? I hope so. As for things that will still
be young and beautiful after this weekend, there's Sunfold. By now
you've probably seen somewhere that the band is actually Annuals, but with
the not-old-enough-to-buy-alcohol guitarist Kenny Florence (and not Adam
Baker) leading the way. A couple of months back they released a split
EP with that other band that is their band, and now they're ready to shove a
full length titled Toy Tugboats into your ears. It'll be out on
Terpsikhore (which as reported in the podcast this weekend, is run by the
people in both of the aforementioned acts) on July 22. Enjoy.

Don't expect to download this and be treated to the raw
energy that Annuals usually emits. Kenny has his
finger on a completely different pulse, and it really shows
here with a swirling arrangement that focuses on mood and
headphone-oriented details over just being loud. Does
that mean this is a boring piece of artsy snobbery?
Not at all. If fact, that sort of thinking isn't even
on the right track. Even with the flighty vocals and
pretty music you're still going to find yourself wanting to
sing-a-long. This is beautiful at its most accessible.
I was expecting
for a band this new to have absolutely nothing on Youtube,
but to my surprise there was an official video for a song
called Oregon. I think the whole thing is
nicely done, but it feels a little emo. Anyone else
agree?
