Apart
from a recent co-starring role in Woody Allen's
Cassandra's Dream, Colin Farrell hasn't exactly
been in the spotlight in quite awhile. So
where's he been? I don't know. He quit
returning my emails long ago.
In any case, it's nice to see the guy roaring back
with an injection of adrenaline by way of In
Bruges. In the film he stars as a hitman
named Ray who is sent by his boss (Ralph Fiennes) to
lay low in Bruges (It's in Belgium) along with his
partner (Brendan Gleason). For most, being a tourist
in a town full of sightseeing opportunities probably
wouldn't be too difficult. But, Ray has a lot
on his mind because of something that happened
during his first hit, so having a load of time to
search the depths of his conscience is actually the
opposite of helpful. Needless to say, it all
leads to a wonderful dose of dark humor, romance
and scattered violence. Or, as some would say,
the essentials.
Here's the deal. This is some of the best work that
Collin Farrell has ever done. Ray is self
centered, spastic, immature, emotional, crass, and
relentless in all of his actions, and Colin projects
all of it through his face and body. You can
literally just look at the guy and clearly see that
all of the marbles are not in place, which is
impressive. It's not all about Colin though,
as Gleason and Fiennes also turn in performances
that warrant the price of admission.
I've always found dark comedies to be something that
each person reacts differently to, so I can't say if
all of you will love In Bruges as much as I did.
However, I do feel confident in saying that it is a
film I would certainly recommend taking a chance on. |
