I have another quip up over at
Austin Sound, and it's about a great experimental pop group called the Weird
Weeds. The column can be found
here.
Before you do that though, I recommend letting the always great Dead Meadow
make your life a little better with a track from their newly released full
length, Old Growth. The guys are functioning as a three-piece
these days, so the heaviness of their last effort, Feathers, has
slightly fallen by the wayside in favor of an overall slimmed down bluesy
rock feel, which is a nice change of pace. If you get an opportunity
to catch them out on the road with Black Mountain then I highly advise that
you don't pass it up. I know I'll be at Emo's when they play there
this weekend. Enjoy.
:Dead
Meadow - What Needs Must Be:
As soon as this gem starts the refreshing arrangement
immediately starts chugging away and Jason Simon's smooth
vocal work crawls in right after. So, it shouldn't
take you too long to see what I meant when I said that
they've streamlined their sound a bit. Personally, I
think it's great since it sort of makes them an act that you
don't necessarily have to be in a certain mood to hear.
That's what I call impressive.
There are no
shortage of Dead Meadow videos on Youtube, but I decided to
go with the one that was recently made for the song above.
Why? Because I think the vintage look and the dreamy
way the shots are streamed together are a perfect
representation of the band's aesthetic, sonic or otherwise.
