Did you guys see that they put
up the Sunshine soundtrackon iTunes!? I usually don't
bother with those sorts of albums (unless they're trendy mix tapes), but I
think I'm going to have to get it.
Here's part three of my Top 50 songs list! Enjoy.
- 30 Through 21 -
30)
:Oh
No Oh My - Wam Bam Thank You Spaceman (Daytrotter):
ONOM is one of my favorite local bands, and this is an
absolute gem that moves almost like nothing else I've heard
this year. Isn't Daytrotter just one of the better
things that the internet has ever birthed?
29)
:And
You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Bells Of Creation:
I really wasn't kidding when I said that this group blew me
away at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Ever since then I've been
loving anything new that I can find and this is honestly one
hell of a thunderous effort. Crank the volume.
28)
:Ponytail
- Celebrate The Body Electric (It Came From An Angel):
Here is a rather wild and abstract tune that I didn't expect
to stick with me like it has. I guess I'll never get
over the limitless energy that they sling around and/or the
chant-inducing vocals, which are catchy in a way that makes
absolutely no sense to me. Weird? Yes. A
blast? Certainly.
27)
:Colin
Meloy - We Both Go Down Together (Live):
Throughout the years I've made it clear that Colin Meloy and
the Decemberists just really aren't my thing, but that
appears to be changing. I like his group's new rock
opera release and his solo live album is beyond charming.
Be sure to sing-a-long loudly here!
26)
:Headlights
- Cherry Tulip:
I wasn't as into Some Racing, Some Stopping as I
thought I would be, but it's possible that it's because I
was transfixed on how incredibly lovely this gem is. I
could listen to that sweet voice sing "I want the sea/I want
the whole sea/For you and me" until the end of days.
25)
:King
Kahn And The Shrines - Torture:
How anyone could not love this song is beyond me. It's
essentially the pinnacle of guilty pleasure with an overly
fuzzed-out vintage sound and absurd lyrics that somehow
manage to also be romantic. Dancing is a must here.
24)
:Parts
And Labor - Nowhere's Nigh:
With a sound that always captures my attention and holds it
hostage, this track has been a favorite of mine for quite a
while. That's also why it pains me to say that I never
got around to checking out the LP that it comes from.
Anyone care to comment on if it's as good as this song?
23)
:From
Bubblegum To Sky - Even The Sunbeams:
When I was sorting through all the songs that I had posted
this year this was one of the few that I made sure not to
accidentally leave out. Sure, it kind of plays up that
retro pop sound to the max, but the endearing songwriting is
too good to ignore.
22)
:Chairlift
- Bruises:
The latest beneficiary of prime placement in an iTunes
commercial, this band has really taken off.
Personally, I think that they fall into the same category
(only their sound is electro-pop) as the band above - the
sweet songwriting is where it's at.
21)
:Ezra
Furman And The Harpoons - We Should Fight:
"I'm not a monster/I'm a human being/And I'm the
greatest thing you've ever seen" After I stumbled upon
this song there were at least two weeks in which I listened
to it roughly one zillion times. It's raucous, all
over the place and fun beyond all reason. Ready your
air guitar.
