- Thao Nguyen And The Get Down Stay Down - Emo's (Inside) - Austin, TX -

Aimee Bobruk

Aimee opened the show with about a 30 minute set that I thought was pretty solid.  Unfortunately, I had never heard of her before last night, so after a handful of quiet, slow strumming numbers it all started to just sound the same.  The vocals were great though, and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing her perform again.

I'm not sure the last time I was in a crowd that actually managed to generate enough chatter to drown out an act on stage.  I mean, while Aimee was playing the attendance level was low enough that you could still hear her, but by the time this duo were ready to do their set they had no chance.

Based on the bits I could make out here and there, I will say that I thought they had a beautiful sound.  It was just too intimate for those rowdy kids at Emo's.  I'll definitely have to watch out for when they come back to town.

Thao Nguyen And The Get Down Stay Down

I realize that by this point in 2008 you all are probably sick and tired of me talking about this act.  I've raved and rambled about We Brave Bee Stings And All to no end, and now I've covered three shows in the past four months.  But what else am I suppose to do?  They're nice people, the music is good and the live shows keep getting better and better.

Seriously though, this may be the last time that I will need to cover them for a while.  Last night's hour long set was exactly what I've been looking for from the trio - it was energetic, well balanced and crisp.  After I saw them with Rilo Kiley in June I said that I thought they were better as a three-piece since it put all of the focus on Thao, who easily has the voice to carry them.  Well, she seems to have really embraced that role since then, and they're all the better for it.  Instead of trying to do the impossible, which is make gems like Bag Of Hammers or Beat sound as big as they should, she just makes sure to kick it up a notch herself, and it makes all the difference.

Alright, I've said enough.  They're good.  You get it.  Now go see them while they're out and about, especially since it won't be too long before they're playing big venues with huge crowds.

Extra Tidbit:  You know an artist has reached a particular level of popularity when you start getting young ladies in the crowd who spend the majority of the set screaming and generally acting insane.  For instance, this conversation that happened behind me...

Girl: "Thao!  I want to fuck you!"
Other Girl:  "Whatever!  She'd probably tell you to get in line."
Both Girls:  "Scream"
