I doubt many of you remember,
but in the first month that this blog existed I mentioned a label by the
name of Exumbrella Records. I also briefly spoke of a little defunct
experimental rock band called the Tremula, who at one point before they
broke up and went their separate ways had me convinced that they were going
to really make a name for themselves. Clearly, that didn't happen, but
one of the members, Will Sartain, stuck in the music scene and is now
one-third of a brand new project titled The Future Of The Ghost. His
new work is definitely not as wild and adventurous as what was done with the
Tremula, but it is a very nice take on punk-infused indie rock.
Freak Out is the name of the trio's debut, so pick it up if you like
what you hear below. Enjoy.

Future Of The Ghost
- Freak Out:
I'm not sure it gets much more swift than this. Will
is on top of his game as far as vocals go, and the
arrangement can only be described as relentless.
Fortunately, even with the onslaught of things that the trio
throws at you there is never a moment where details and
crafty songwriting get lost in the shuffle. For
example, the alarm-esque clashing of instruments that
follows the line of "two men holding hands walking down the
street in a small town in Texas creates a fucking panic."
Nicely done.
:The
Future Of The Ghost
- It Goes Down:
"I stared at
your face/Trying to figure out the fabric of life." If
I didn't know any better I would say that this is some sort
of unreleased Pavement track. The songwriting is
littered with quips and witty one-liners, and the music
carries the very same effortless charm that Malkmus and Co.
had for so long. It's really like I mentioned last
week with Nada Surf, if you can't be original then at least
do whatever it is that you're doing really well. I'd
say Will and his friends understand that well enough.
BTW, does
anyone still have Episode 32 of the podcast laying around?
I somehow managed to delete that one episode when I reset my
computer this weekend and I would really love to get it
back. Please help if you can! I'll love you
forever.
