I love the holidays. It
makes me want to look into how hard it would be to arrange the same sort of
event at least once a month. This way on a regular basis everyone
would get to lay around and do nothing but eat a lot and watch TV, which would
help relieve stress and general crankiness. Probably. At any
rate, it's actually cold outside here in Austin, and I almost don't know
what to do with myself. I've just been huddled up in my apartment
seeking out appropriate sounds for the weather, which brings me to Ben Chasney's new Six Organs Of Admittance album, Shelter From The Ash.
Not only does his project have a name that screams winter, but a lot of mood
and atmosphere that does the same as well. Enjoy.

Organs Of Admittance - Jade Like Wine:
Ben's fuzzy, hushed vocal style is good here, and it's one
of the reasons that the song has so much going for it as far
as atmosphere is concerned. But, the creeping guitar
riffs that come and go, the swift acoustic guitar and the
bits of haunting harmonies are what really do the trick.
That's right, in this folk number the songwriting is not
what takes center stage, it's the details around it.
Too bad that I don't get to point that sort of trait out
very often when it comes to the genre.
This is the
video for the title track from Shelter
From The Ash. Strangely, the song actually has
a bit of pep as far as its slightly psychedelic arrangement goes, but the tone of
Cam Archer's direction is rather dark and gloomy in way that
seems as if it would be a better fit for Jade Like Wine.
Hmph.
