Before I get to Thao Nguyen I want to point out that I kind of hate the first song released from Cat Power's upcoming covers album.  Normally, I like anything that she does, so I'm wondering if it's because I've yet to recover from her FFF Fest set.  Let me know what you guys think about it.  Now, onto Thao and her brand new album, We Brave Bee Stings And All, for Kill Rock Star Records that is expected to hit store shelves late next January.  I actually remember hearing good things about 2005's Like The Linen, but I never actually took the time to check it out.  Of course, as it would turn out that was a mistake, as she is a great all around talent that I definitely should have been adoring for much longer than a day.  Better late than never, right?  Enjoy.

:Thao Nguyen - Beat (Health, Life, And Fire):  I think this might end up being one of my favorite songs of the year.  Thao is a fantastic songwriting and she has a great voice that reminds me a lot of Land Of Talk's Elizabeth Powell, but with a more pop-sensible delivery.  I also really like her backing band, The Get Down Stay Down, and the breezy arrangement that they've craftily assembled beneath her.  Personally, I don't think it gets much better than this.

As I mentioned yesterday, live videos shot by the audience can be a crapshoot.  However, in another moment of Youtube luck I was able to find this solid recording of Thao performing Tallymarks at the Black Cat Club in Washington DC.  I just kind of wish that the camera wasn't set so far from the stage.
