The Mist is a great
film, and I highly recommend that you see it when it hits theaters later
this month. If I get time I'll try to write up a full review of it and
what director Frank Darabont said in the Q&A afterwards. For now
though, I have something that I've been waiting impatiently for all year,
and it's brand new music from Why?. Their previous full length in
2005, Elephant Eyelash, was an incredibly brilliant and unique piece
of work that I still listen to on a regular basis. So while my
expectations are higher than high for next year's Alopecia I am
confident that the guys will come through with something just as stellar.
Or at least that's what the first single from their teaser EP, The
Hollows, has quickly convinced me to believe. It's out November 27
on Anticon. Enjoy.
:Why?
- The Hollows:
There's a lot that I love about Why?. Part of it is
Yoni Wolf's slightly nasal vocals and hip hop-enthused
delivery. Another attraction is the music, which, like
here, is a swirling mix of hip hop, folk pop and indie rock.
However, the main trait that keeps me coming back time after
time is the songwriting. No one writes like these guys
do. Hell, I can't even pick a favorite line because of
many great ones they are. You need to hear this
immediately. If you don't then you'll only be
depriving yourself of one of 2007's better efforts.
Here is a fan
made video for the gem Gemini (Birthday Song), which
is from the previously mentioned Elephant Eyelashes.
I tend to really enjoy what fans do since there is usually a
bit of passion pushing them to not churn out crap, and this
is no different. Good work all around.
- The Pipettes -
On an show
related side note, I saw the Pipettes at the Parish this
past Wednesday night. It was a fantastic, albeit
rather short, time and I want you to know that you must get
out and see the ladies while they are touring the US.
You definitely won't regret it.
Although, you should know that their set will seem as if it
lasted only about 15 minutes. Or at least that's how
it seemed with me. I still can't figure out how they
managed to do a nice portion of their catalog without me
knowing that 55 minutes had passed. My guess is that I
must have gotten distracted by all the dancing poke-a-dot
outfits on stage, which then lead to me losing track of
time. I guess it could have been worse.
Opening the entire show was the Pipettes brainchild known as
Monster Bobby. His solo work is good, so I wasn't
surprised that it worked well in a live environment.
But, I was surprised at how much he seemed to rambling
incoherently about whatever popped into his head.
Perhaps he was nervous?
Nicole Atkins And The Sea were the other opening act, and I
thought they were stellar. Nicole's voice is as
stellar live as it is on record and the Sea really know to
push out an incredibly crisp sound. They're definitely
an act that more people should be raving about, so tell your
friends.
