More rain! I'm seriously
beginning to think that it would be a good idea to invest in a small
collection of rain repellent attire so that I will be able to stop
convincing myself to not leave the house. I'm also thinking that I
need to cool it a bit on the synth pop this week, which, I plan on
accomplishing today by getting incredibly retro with the help of Nicole
Willis And The Soul Investigators. I have a couple of gems from her
album, Keep Reachin' Up, which I just recently received from Light In
The Attic Records (Black Angels, Saturday Knights, Free Design).
They'll be releasing the disc in the US (its been available overseas for
awhile) in the next month or so, and I think it's easily one of my favorite
albums of 2007. Prepare to be swept off your feet. Enjoy.

Willis And The Soul Investigators - If This Ain't Love (Don't Know What Is):
This is that type of song that comes along and completely crushes whatever
else you've been loving lately. Then it forces you to devote all of
your attention to it. I spent most of yesterday listening to this song
(and the whole album, really) over and over, so I clearly have no issue with
what it demands, and I don't think you will either since this is truly
soul-funk at it's finest whether you're talking way back when or now.

Willis And The Soul Investigators - No One's Gonna Love You:
The Soul Investigators' creeping arrangement that features all sorts of
sounds that come and go as they see fit in this is stellar. It not
only performs admirably in supporting Nicole during the moments when she is
wailing away on your ears, but it generously provides over two minutes of
catch-your-breath time at the end of the track. You'll definitely need
that time due to the fact that getting pummeled by the sheer force of
Nicole's voice generally doesn't allow for breathing , so don't take it for
granted.
