Yikes! What a week this
has been on my end of things. I've unfortunately had to simultaneously
struggle with catching up, settling in and being temporarily unemployed. It
will certainly make me happy when some prospects fall into place and I can
get back to being overly busy. Until then, allow me to continue my
birthday week extravaganza with a couple of selections from Nurses' debut
album, Hangin' Nothin' But Our Hands Down. The Jason Cupp (The
Elected) produced effort has a rather nifty sound that is anything but
conventional and will probably end up being one of those discs that quietly
makes its way onto a lot of lists in December. Enjoy.

- Alone At Last:
"I heard you found someone/Someone who looks like me." I find this
line to be rather hilarious since I can't seem to think of anything
comparable to this quirky track. The quasi-shrieking vocals that
should seemingly kill your ears actually do more to inspire spastic
recreations, and the arrangement effortlessly glides all over the place with
different layers of sound that each get a moment in the sun. Don't be
fooled by the two minute runtime, this is going to be something you will be
revisiting constantly.
:Nurses - Hungry Mouth:
Those of you seeking something a bit more accessible will find this gem to
be right up your alley. The sound won't drive your brain wild trying
to soak in everything that's going on since it's a lot simpler and clearly
meant to have the listener focus on the lyrics, which are slightly creepy
due to the content. For example: "When she gets those bruises/Don't
you know it's because I made her my wife." Did I mention these guys
like to keep it unconventional?
On a grindhouse related side
note, I recently watched Master Of The Flying Guillotine.
I can't say for sure I know exactly what happened in the film because the
version that I got from Netflix was shot to hell. Not only did the
disc skip about 15 minutes of the movie but it was obviously a rip from a
poor VHS copy with incomplete subtitles. Still, it had some pretty
cool fight scenes in it and I would recommend it if you can find a good
copy. Also, if you have Showtime I saw that they had it on the other
day, and I highly doubt that they showed such a poor version.
