So, would it be appropriate for
my first post from Austin to not be about a Austin artist from an
Austin label? Of course not! That's why I'm kicking off my triumphant
return to the world of blogging with the fabulous hometown Virgin Of The
Birds. The lo-fi outfit, which is spearheaded by Morning Spy member
and Abandoned Love Records owner Jon Rooney, will be releasing an album
titled Mixed Choir on July 10. The disc features some heavy
contributions from another Austin band that I've rambled about before, the
Lovely Sparrows, so if you enjoyed the warm charm of their sound then you
are going to instantly fall for what Jon has created. Enjoy.
:Virgin Of The Birds - City Of Falcons:
To be honest I think there are better songs on the album than this one, but
I love upbeat retro pop and I wanted to be sure to give those of you who are
cranky today a reason to smile. As you bounce happily try to take a
moment to admire how well the arrangement matches up with Jon; it's almost
like one big sing-a-long. Why can't more band's get on the same page
like this?
:Virgin Of The Birds - Hey Kirsten:
This makes me think of Pavement, but a little more retro and a whole lot
less sarcastic. Still, that it isn't to say Jon doesn't show some
lyrical prowess. I especially love the gem right before the 1:00 mark
when he effortlessly slays me with "Hey Kirsten/Trick me with your
smile/There's a need for education." Grab the headphones for the best
listen.
