Man, you guys have no idea how
difficult it was to assemble today's rock themed EP. I think it took
me forever! Is everyone really only making pop music these days?
I mean, I know I said yesterday that I thought there wasn't enough
interesting rock currently being made, but deep down I kind of figured that
maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. Anyway, here's five different
styles from the genre. Enjoy.
:The
Muslims - Call It A Daze:
Apparently, a lot of people think that this San Diego quartet sound pretty
similar to the Velvet Underground. I can see why they would think
that, but more than anything I find that they remind me more of a
simplified, garage rock version of Nirvana. Expect to see a lot from
this band in the future, as I think they will only get better as time passes
(they've only been together about a year).
:Gore
Gore Girls - Pleasure Unit:
I'm not sure what your first thought was when you saw the title of this
track, but I hope that it was something sleazy. After all, that's
exactly what Gore Gore Girls are all about here, and I absolutely love it.
Make sure that you take a moment to pour over the lyrics or you'll miss out
on badass lines like: "Deep down inside I'm a selfish witch/One half
tom boy and one half bitch/Breaking hearts is what I do." Zing!
:Yeah
Yeah Yeahs - Is Is:
I wasn't going to use this old/new piece from the recently released Is Is
EP, but it's new to me and I wanted an excuse to post it up since I
think it's Karen O and Co. at their best. It has a lot going for it
that's really great, such as: the epic nature of Karen's voice, and an
arrangement that's raw, intense, and thunderous. This is quite
different than the slick production of their recent work.
:Les
Savy Fav - The Equestrian:
This new release from the band's upcoming album, Let's Stay Friends,
is of the blistering, in your face style of rock, which is a little
surprising considering the guest artists (Emily Haines, Nick Thorburn,
Eleanor Friedberger) that are on the record. Still, I'm super happy
that these guys are back after a six year stint of no new music, somebody
needs to be making quality straight forward rock.
:Junius
- At The Age Of Decay:
By far, this is the most produced of all the songs in the EP.
Fortunately, that is far from bad as these guys sound like an experimental
version of Failure, so the crisp mixing works to their benefit. If you
can, listen to this in headphones. It really give the atmospheric
vocals and the intricate arrangement a lot more weight since you can easily
hear all the details without any sort of background noise distracting you.
