Soundtracks weird me out.  It always seems like there are a few each year that will have a song that is cool and then it's promptly followed up with a disappointing full length by whoever did it.  In fact it makes me wonder if those types of albums don't meet my expectations because the new songs aren't as good as the one or if because they don't work as well as together as they do put in the middle of other songs; like I said soundtracks weird me out.  Today I have a band that made a good soundtrack song and instead of showing up with a lame album they are getting ready to roll out a debut full length that has even better songs on it!  The group is Secretary Bird and their self titled disc, which drips of melodic pop, will be released on March 20 via In De Groot Recordings.

:Secretary Bird - Somewhere Girls:  On occasion I come across indie songs that I think could really be a hit on commercial radio and this is definitely one of them.  Mike Semple (Friends Of Dean Martinez, Campfire Girls, Giant Sand) is the main creative force behind Secretary Bird and what he has arranged is a great little melodic pop song on top of some very nice guitar-work that makes me think of some of the pop songs that were big during the late 90s.  I think you guys are going to very much enjoy this one.

:Secretary Bird - Tio:  This is the song from the Fast Food Nation Soundtrack that got the band some nice words from Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly and anyone else who had the pleasure of hearing it.  Most of the time PF and I are never on the same page but their comment about the song being "twangy" and having a "huge guitar hook and a big chorus" is spot on.  My favorite part is Mike's voice, his melodic style is so incredibly easy on the ears.
