I realize that we are only half way through the first month of the year but I feel as if I haven't been posting enough hip hop, which is one of the things that I would like to have show up here more.  I think that mainstream music from that genre is terrible and given that there are so many great indie artists making all kinds of wonderful music I want to help spread the word.  My first hip hop act that I intend on getting jammed in your head is Swell and DJ Spacecaboose, aka Metermaids.  The duo has some insanely catchy stuff that blurs the lines between hip hop and indie pop in ways that I haven't really heard before, so if you feel like grooving around your apartment then take a moment to check out the two songs that I have from their 27 Sound released EP.

:Metermaids - Don't Sleep:  "Hey/Don't go to sleep/You can do anything you want/Stay up with me."  Clearly the lyrics in this song aren't anything to write home about but they sure are catchy and fun to sing-a-long too.  Of course this just happens to be one of those songs that wins me over because of it's sound, not it's lyrics.  If you have ever listened to any mid-90's pop then this may sound pretty familiar too you, except for the fact that it has been spiced up with various hip hop elements.  If you like Jurassic 5 then I recommend giving this one a listen as soon as possible.

:Metermaids - Let It Rain:  Once Again with Let It Rain Metermaids have made another pop song that is packed with all kinds of nifty hip hop parts.  This one isn't nearly as upbeat as Don't Sleep but it certainly grooves like there is no tomorrow, there is even a catchy-as-hell hook that I guarantee you will find yourself humming for at least a week.  If you wanted more of a hip hop feel from the song above than I think this is track that you are looking for, check this one out if you enjoyed Jedi Mind Tricks last disc.
