Before I begin I want all of
you to know how big of a relief it is to be back to regular posting.
Now, what better way to stay of trouble with the RIAA than posting
more FREE MP3S! I'm sure that they won't mind! In all
seriousness I would actually like to avoid them for all eternity, and
helping with that quest today is the major label-less Nick Robin. Nick
emailed me awhile back and during my "down time" I really came to enjoy the
two songs that he sent me, which are from his new album, Living Off
The Land. In Nick's words the disc is "loosely based on Mike
Watt's Contemplating The Engine Room," and it deals with his
"father's occupation" and his "own experiences as a struggling musician."
The disc drops tomorrow. Enjoy
:Nick Robin - High Above, Looking Down:
I missed Nick's first full length but from what I have read it sounds as if
it was a pretty low-fi affair. In this it appears he decided to throw
much of that out the window in exchange for a really nice, crisp folk-pop
sound. It isn't the most original take on the genre but little things
like the playful tune that starts the song and Nick's willingness to stray
away from one particular vocal style goes a long way towards keeping it
fresh.
:Nick Robin - Skeleton Key:
You still aren't going to find much here that I would consider low-fi but I
do think this song is a little more folk than it is pop. Nick has a
great voice and I especially love how he very good at doing different things
with it. He could probably croon his way through every song and they
would still be decent, but when he picks it up like he does at the 2:20 mark
it certainly makes for a more interesting listen.
