And just like that we're in December, which means I very much need to start working on my best of 2007 list so that I share it with all of you before I take a nice break for the holidays.  For now though, I'm actually going to go way back to the 80s and the self proclaimed psychedelic death rock sound of Soul Merchants.  That's right, instead of giving you what won't be out for months I'm sharing a couple of songs that have been available for over 20 years.  But, as random as this may seem it is actually far from it, as the long-defunct quartet have a double disc compilation coming that will certainly make all who hear it wish that they could travel back in time to see the band play.  In fact, I'm already at work on that now.  Flux Capacitors are a relatively easy build, right?  Enjoy.

:Soul Merchants - Crown Of Glory:  "When you think of roses do you think of thorns/Any crown of glory always has its whores."  As should be expected from any band that uses the word death in the description of their sound, this gem isn't exactly something that will slap a smile on your face and make you want to watch cartoons.  However, if bright and shiny isn't your thing anyway then you won't be disappointed with the dark, driving bass lines and the incredibly haunting vocals that accompany them.  This is a must-hear if you like Joy Division.

:Soul Merchants - Joanna If you don't watch out you just might find yourself swaying back and forth and singing-a-long casually to this death rock effort.  Why?  Well, I think mostly has to do with the dreamy vocals and how effortlessly appealing they sound paired up with the song's whimsical mix of playful guitar riffs and dance-worthy drumming.  It's certainly a vastly different experience than the song above, but then again a little variety never hurt anyone.  This should be heard by any of you who are on the look out for a great piece of pysch-pop.
