Check it out! No EP
today. I think it's the first time in awhile that I haven't had to
purge my inbox in order to keep up with the constant stream of new music
that I'm always being bombarded with. It's really kind of nice,
especially since the lower number of emails and packages have allowed me to
spend more time with certain material that I would have maybe overlooked
otherwise. For instance, today I have a member of Conor Oberst's Team
Love roster, David Dondero. He has a new album, Simple Love,
coming out soon and even though it's probably going to be one of the finer
singer/songwriter releases of the year I most definitely would have skipped
if this was a busier week. Fortunately, as I noted, that isn't the
case. Enjoy.

Dondero - Rothko Chapel:
I don't want to use both song rambles to note how much David can sound like
Conor at times, so I'll just do it here since it's pretty easy to imagine
this as an offbeat, jangly Bright Eyes pop song of some sort. Now, I
realize that thinking of Conor with a jangly arrangement seems a bit strange
and not all that simple, but you'll immediately see what I mean once you
hear the upbeat music beneath David's quivering vocals and superb
storytelling skills.

Dondero - When The Heart Breaks Deep:
"I gotta tell you buddy/Maybe you should just let her go." I find this
line to be the only one in the entire song that doesn't make me cringe.
That isn't to say the rest are lame or anything, it's just that they're
dripping with so much contempt and distrust for someone of the opposite sex
that I can't help but vividly picture each word. Oddly enough, I still
find myself revisiting it constantly even with its disheartening story.
I blame such actions on David's amazing voice.
