I think I may have seen the
year's best threequel last night at a sneak preview of the Bourne
Ultimatum. It did a fantastic job of staying in line with the
style of the series' first two entries and it wrapped up all of the loose
ends nicely, so I could not have asked for more. If you're looking for
something that has a wealth of smart dialogue and even smarter action scenes
then you need to see it when it opens this Friday.
In an unrelated note, I put together an EP that's meant to please the ears.
Enjoy.
:The
Real Tuesday Weld - Last Words:
There's a lot to love in this pretty tune, but the most deserving of all the
pieces is Stephen Coats' voice, which carries a perfectly honed, seasoned
sound that's so good it will have you feeling the need to rush out and pick
up his lengthy back catalog just so you can hear what it may of evolved
from. Watch out for the release of his upcoming album, The London
Book Of The Dead, on August 28. It looks as if it's going to be
one worth remembering.
:Candie
Payne - One More Chance:
If you've ever wished that the Pipettes were less cute and a bit more
serious with their retro pop ways then this is the song for you.
Personally, I would never want the Pipettes to change a thing, but if they
were to venture into territory that doesn't inspire non-stop dancing I
sincerely hope that they could produce something as good as this spirited,
catchy number. Check out her disc, I Wish I Could Have Loved You
More, whenever possible.
:Red
Fox Grey Fox - Up With Mittens, Down With Gloves:
Given the title of the song you would think that it's some sort of light
hearted, upbeat piece of pop, but that's pretty far from the truth.
These guys are rather serious, which means that once you hear the raw
intensity of their sound the only thing you'll be thinking about is the
indie rock/emo scene and artists like Sunny Day Real Estate. The
band's new album, From The Land Of Bears, Ice And Rocks, drops next
week on August 7.
:The
Mohawk Lodge - Wear Em Out:
I really like this song. In fact, I wish I had paid more attention to
it last week as it's a nice solid piece of indie rock that's driven by moody
guitars and good vocal work, so it would have fit in perfectly with the
other music that was posted. I suppose that's why they say hindsight
is 20/20. Anyway, their sophomore effort, Wildfires, hit store
shelves yesterday, so give it a shot if you like this song.
:1990s
- You're Supposed To Be My Friend:
These guys have been getting a lot of press lately and after giving them a
listen for the first time yesterday I can see why. Not only does the
trio give you an arrangement full of foot stomping pop-enthused garage rock,
but they make sure you're smiling by giving out lines like: "I request you
be my friend/We'll spend some time taking drugs." Cookies is
available now.
