Proving that what you see at
SXSW sticks with you for longer than you can imagine, I bring to you the
Comas. I saw the Brooklyn/Chapel Hill quintet at the on the first
official night of the week and they really impressed me with their Silversun
Pickups-esque fuzz rock. The band just released their fourth full
length, Spells, for Vagrant Records, who have been steadily putting
together a roster that has some stellar indie acts (The Hold Steady,
Futureheads). Bill Racine (The Flaming Lips, Rogue Wave, Mates Of
State) produced Spells at what the band called a somewhat spooky
mansion nestled atop the Catskill Mountains. I guess that would
explain why the disc has such an expansive sound. Enjoy.
:The Comas - Come My Sunshine:
After hearing this I am suddenly having a hard time coming up with two
people that have sounded better together than Andy Herod and Nicole
Gehweiler do in this distorted gem. It's amazing how well they match
up with the intensity of the music, and I really love how they effortlessly
glide back and forth between each other. Good luck finding a better
way to kick of your weekend.
:The Comas - Red Microphones:
This is the song that will inevitably lodge itself in your head. Andy
is at his most radio friendly with a delivery that is light and easy to
sing-a-long with, and the arrangement feels playful. Oddly enough
though, my favorite part of the song comes around the midway mark where it
shifts into about 30 seconds of subtle beauty. If you need a guilty
pleasure song, this it it.
