Since I began blogging I have had a handful of labels that have been consistently sending me great music and one of those in particular is Livewire Recordings.  The folks over there have a real knack for finding interesting pop music and today's band, The Winter Sounds, is a prime example of what I mean.  The quintet is based out of Athens, Georgia and they have an artsy indie rock sound that they are all set to showcase in full on their new album, Porcelain Empire, once June 26 rolls around.  Yeah, I realize that is quite a long time away but outside of the fact that I like to keep all of you ahead of the curve I really didn't want to wait until some time in May to share songs as good as the ones below.  Enjoy.

:The Winter Sounds - Windy City Nights:  I find this song more and more amazing every time that I listen to it.  The vocal work is a nifty mix of shoe-gaze and new wave and it is spread out over a lush soundscape that rides the fence between pop and straight up rock.  In fact my favorite part is how the song is put together in a way that has the verses full of upbeat drumming and jangly guitars while the choruses feel like the band is making sure to stay grounded in their rock ways.  Count this another one of 2007's pleasant surprises.

:The Winter Sounds - Sound Forged Like Spine:  I gave you rock in the song above and now I am going to supply you with a moody slow-burner that brings to mind Stellarstarr* if they turned down the new wave in favor of some streamlined pop.  This is very much full of melancholic sounds in the arrangement and vocals, but with lyrics like "A promise forever is a long time" and "What are the choices do I have?" it becomes pretty clear as to why it is the way it is.  Be sure to take your seat at the window before playing this one.
