I recently graduated with a B.A. in Radio/TV from Stephen F. Austin
University here in Nacogdoches, Texas. I would be long gone from East Texas
but my lady is not done with school until next summer, which means no moving
until then. One of the places we are considering a move to is Austin. For
people like me, Austin is sort of like the Holy Land for the musically
inclined. Music is everywhere there (hence people calling it the Live Music
Capitol of the World) and there is also an abundance of film (I love you
Alamo Drafthouse). Bands such as the Black Angels, Ghostland Observatory,
and Sound Team are just a few examples of those that gained some notoriety
over 2006 and now the Lovely Sparrows are here with Pulling Up Floors, and
Pouring On (New) Paint to make me want to pack up now and move to the Holy
Land.
:The Lovely Sparrows - Chemicals Change: "My
father always says love is a nice day job but it won't pay the rent." I love
smart, witty lyrics like that but the thing I love most about this song is
how it moves, it has this pace about it that makes you want to pay attention
to how beautiful everything in it is. The best part is that even if the
music was terrible Shawn Jones could probably make the song decent with his
amazingly captivating vocals. A number of bands lay claim to the folk-pop
genre but I am not sure if there are any doing it better right now then
these guys.
:The Lovely Sparrows - I Have A Need You See:
This song is from the band's self released 7" titled Take Your Hats Off, You
Godless Bastards. When this came out there were a number of blogs who raved
about it but I totally missed the bandwagon until now. I did not have a blog
then so that is my reason and I'm sticking too it. This song is not
beautiful per say but it has instantly become one of my favorite pop songs
that I have heard this year. Guess it's time to chalk Shawn Jones up as
another guy to hopefully run into on the streets of Austin one day.
On a side note, this morning I saw that Myspace is going to start allowing
artists to charge people for downloads, cha-ching for Tom. Speaking of
Myspace, check out the the Lovely Sparrows there!
